Screenwriter and author John August. A reader asks: What other names did you consider and how did you land on Arlo Finch? I have a very hard time writing a character if I don’t love the name. So I obsess over picking the right one.

I’ll spend hours staring in the middle distance, trying out various combinations until something clicks. The right name would be especially important in this case. From the start, I was pretty sure the book was going to be titled some variation of Boy’s Name in the Place of the Noun, so I needed something appropriate for both a 1. For Arlo Finch, the last name came first. I’ve always liked Finch, either as a first or last name. It’s been on my what- about list for years.

It has the combination of feeling classic but unusual — I’ve never met anyone named Finch, but I wouldn’t be surprised to. Culturally, I’d believe that the family was American, possibly of English descent. Of course, “finch” is also a kind of bird. I’m not much of an ornithologist, but I knew they were small and flitty.

So I googled them. Here’s a house finch: From the photographer’s description: that look is the quintessence of cool plainness. That’s a great pedigree. But it’s also related to my own family’s name.

My original last name is Meise, which is the German term for the bird we call a titmouse. Here’s the tufted variety: So the Finch and die Meise are both small flitty birds. They’re not the same, but they’re the same general idea. Since I knew the main character of the book was going to be a stand- in for my 1.

As of the 2010 census, the borough's population was 14,488, reflecting an.

Once I had settled on Finch, “Arlo” came relatively quickly. Working off a list of common boys’ names, I started by ruling out single- syllable names, like John or Jim or Rob. The staccato one- two of these names can certainly work (e. Huck Finn, John Wick, Tom Ford), but it didn’t feel right for this. Moving up to two syllables, you quickly realize that almost all boys’ names have the stress on the front half: DUH- duh rather than duh- DUH. But even within that pattern, there’s lot of variation on where your mouth ends up when finishing the weak syllable. Try saying the following names out loud: Liam Finch.

Jacob Finch. Logan Finch. Joseph Finch. In the first two examples, the final . It worked well with Finch, and was my father’s name. But it didn’t quite feel like the character. I ended up making Arlo’s best friend “Henry Wu.”I found Arlo quite low on the list. I loved it immediately.

Like Finch, it was a name that I’d never seen in the wild but certainly believed could exist.“Arlo Finch” is easy to pronounce. And it balances really nicely with Finch when you see both words together. I chose the name on October 2. The next day, I set to work writing chapter one. Arlo’s sister became Jaycee Finch — another two- syllable first name ending in a vowel.

His mom became Celeste Bellman Finch. Months later, I discovered there’s at least one real person named Arlo Finch. But that’s not particularly surprising. There are quite a few Harry Potters and Tom Riddles out there as well. Ultimately, what makes a name work isn’t that it’s unique, but that it uniquely suits the character. For this book, for this kid, I was really happy to find Arlo Finch. Arlo Finch in the Valley of Fire comes out February 6, 2.

Messiaen News. News ~ Concert Calender ~ CD New Releases and more!!! Messiaen world premiere! Fauvettes de L'H.

The work, for piano, several soloists and orchestra, was to respond to an official order for the centenary of Claude Debussy, in 1. The trip to Japan by Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod in the summer of 1.

The fascination that Messiaen had for this country inspires him indeed Sept Ha. Undoubtedly pressed by the deadlines, he resumed and adapted some of the themes of the concerto, to Sept Ha. It is by mixing songs of birds of Japan and some of southern France that the composer would pay tribute to Debussy. If the first works found in the concerto propose a too brief orchestration, the score of the piano solo, on the other hand, is magnificent, brilliant and among the most daring of this period. Based on birds' notes taken in 1. H. This astounding score is to be presented.

Taking again the indications of structure left by the author, Fauvettes de l'H. Roger Muraro will play Fauvettes de l'H. The composition was previously intended for Messiaen’s final completed orchestral work . A keen ornithologist, all of Messiaen’s music from the 1. Catholic faith. Christopher Dingle’s research on the piece was supported by the French Music Research Hub at Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University, and he drew on over 2. Messiaen’s oeuvre to fully realise the three- stave score.

He said: “From everything we know of Messiaen, it is almost certain that he would have used this movement in another work had he lived longer – it is too good a piece to discard. I am hugely excited about hearing the piece, and this is likely to be the last premiere of a complete mature orchestral movement by Messiaen.“Birdsong was a fascination of his throughout his life, but he became more rigorous and scientific in his approach from the 1. He filled many manuscript books with birdsong notations, and much of it was done in the field, but he also used recordings, working the birdsong into his compositions.“His use of birdsong is much more sophisticated than any other composer in terms of the species he represented, the interpretation of song, and the notation. He regarded birds as God’s musicians, almost like angels.”Un oiseau des arbres de Vie is a challenging piece.

The orchestra is very large, the woodwind section including seven flutes and eight clarinets, while there is also plenty of tuned and unpitched percussion, and multiple changes of tempo. Dingle added: “It’s fast and furious, with the song flying around the instruments and continually punctuated by a punchy gesture for the whole orchestra.

I think it will be breath- taking for the audience and leave the conductor and orchestra breathless!”The world premiere of Olivier Messiaen’s Un oiseau des arbres de Vie took place on 7 August at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms. It was performed by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Nicholas Collon. Robert Scholl. Recitals of the Complete Organ Works of Olivier Messiaen (1. Arundel Catheadral during 2.

Messiaen’s organ works represent a major cornerstone of his output. Messiaen was an organist who sought to express his Catholic Faith, the source of his inspiration, through his music. This series of recitals at Arundel Cathedral by Robert Sholl presented Messiaen’s complete organ works both in concert and as devotional works.
